How to have a big second wedding on a small budget

Although a second wedding can be a full-blown affair, with a traditional floor-length gown, seven bridal attendants and five hundred guests, the trend is toward a smaller wedding with less-elaborate bridal attire, fewer bridesmaids and fewer guests, says Diane Warner.

Warner, author of "How to Have a Big Wedding on a Smaller Budget, 4th Edition," (Betterway Books), says, "I've discovered from second wedding brides and grooms that they have discovered 'less' is often 'more' when it comes to planning a deeply poignant, personalized, meaningful wedding."

Here are some second wedding trends to consider:

Affordable Wedding Venues:

  • Small Chapel
  • Bed and breakfast
  • Private home or garden
  • Historical site, such as a mansion, lighthouse or a restored Victorian home.
  • Public venue, such as a rose garden or lakeside setting.

    Bride's Attire

  • Tea-length or street-length cocktail dress
  • Dressy suit
  • Bridesmaid's gown in off-white or pastel shade
  • Rent a wedding gown!

    Groom's Attire

  • Dark suit

    Attendants

  • One bridal attendant (maid or matron of honor)
  • One groomsman (best man)
  • Children from previous marriage included in the wedding party

    Flowers

  • Fewer arrangements
  • Less elaborate arrangements, bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages
  • Basic supermarket floral department wedding package

    Music

  • One instrumentalist, such as a guitarist, harpist or pianist
  • One soloist for the ceremony
  • Taped music or a DJ for the reception

    Reception

  • Mid-afternoon cake, coffee and champagne only
  • Mid-morning breakfast buffet
  • Evening dessert-only reception
  • Light finger food luncheon buffet
